my take on discovery...

the new side project created by wes miles (ra ra riot) and rostam batmanglij (vampire weekend).

in theory, it sounds like it should be some kind of beachy, surf, ra ra/vamp offshoot, which is by no means bad ... in fact, that would be nice, considering ra ra riot and vampire weekend both have that similar "island" feel, hence the reason they're friends, other than the fact that they're both from new york, and that they've played together a few times.

strangely, this is not really what discovery is. sure, it retains some of the "island-y" elements in some songs, but it also ... well, let me put it this way, so basically it's as if kanye west, chromeo, and yacht threw up on ra ra and vamp, and they all got sucked into a vocoder and took a trip to the eighties (at one point, i even thought i was listening to "electric slide"...whattt?) and of course i mean this in the best way possible.
i have fallen victim to the tempting synth beats and the tantalizing falsettos. it's all superbly ghettofab, and is bound to become the soundtrack of my summer.
i have the feeling this won't do well with the pitchfork.com standards, but when have they ever been a reliable source for music reviews? they like wavves and vivian girls, remember?

i've heard a few testimonials, including saying that discovery is just a cheap version of ra ra riot ... so, it kind of is. it doesn't really display any "true" musical talent, other than being able to throw some vocals with a well composed laptop track. it's merely catchy and fun to dance to, and isn't that what the average person looks for in music?

i can't get enough of "carby" which fascinatingly, features ezra koenig of vampire weekend.
i've been listening to it on repeat for the last two days.
i suggest you find the leak for the album, not so cleverly entitled "LP" ... yes.



other than this, i can't get enough of the new little boots album, hands.
it is utterly fantastic, and if you can get caught up in the catchy choruses in EVERY song, there must be something terribly wrong with you.

my birthday week officially starts this weekend, and yes, it's loaded with shows including best friends forever @ silent barn, patrick wolf @ highline, and no doubt and janelle monae @ pnc, the day before my birthday.
sounds good to me.

monday update ... again!

blawgging has been slow lately ... but it's for a good reason.
i've been busy all week pretty much. just been busy being awesome.
probably one of the best weeks in a while ... not gonna lie.

on thursday, i went to topshop ... opening day, so i had to wait approximately an hour and 43 minutes to get in, but holy hell, was it worth it. i went through the entire store about 4 times and bought a whole slew of fabulous garments. so exciting.



on saturday, i went to see ra ra riot and cut off your hands at webster hall. as much as i hate hate hate webster hall, this show was just fantastic. i hadn't been to a good show in over a month ... i NEEDED something great to end my withdrawal.
okay, so the first guy, jon moses was a little strange, but i suppose he had fun. i'll just say, i would NOT want him to be my underwear. no thank you.
next up was cut off your hands. they were every bit as wonderful as we thought they would be. we'd been dying to see them for so long, and my oh my did they deliver. nick basically owned the entire stage with his spazzmatic dancing.
agh ... sooooo good!























then ra ra riot was the icing on the already delicious cupcake.
i hadn't seen them since summer 2008 because i felt like i was all "ra ra'd out" from seeing them so many times last year. i had almost forgotten how good they are live.
of course, i still can't forgive them for changing the lyrics of "can you tell," but the set was good. they played for about an hour and 15 minutes, oh and they did some new songs, good stuff.
i was fully satisfied.

the next day, i finished all of my awesome essays, then went back to topshop to buy more things and to see kim dj.
i picked up another dress and another skirt. kim was playing all my favorite booty bumpin top 40 hip-hop tunes, then as i was dancing while waiting on line, i glanced out of the corner of my eye up to the dj booth, only to see kim waving really hard to get my attention. she slapped matt's arm, pointed at me and they both waved. i looked around to make sure they were waving to me, and sure enough they were.
i waved back and continued dancing.
i guess matt doesn't secretly hate me anymore.
oh matt and kim, you are the best.

i officially have $12 to my name. awesome.

what the hell...

is a rhumb line?

so, we went to virgin for ra ra riot's album release show ... i guess we didn't learn from the last instore we went to, that it's NOT necessary that you buy the cd to get in.
but of course, we ended up spending $10 each on the new album, which i had already heard because i'm horrible and caught the leak 3 weeks ago.
honestly, i'm not happy with it. and from what i've read about the album, i seem to be the only person who has said anything bad about it. peculiar.
as i've probably stressed before, it's like they stripped the emotion and depth from every song on the EP, threw in a few new songs and a kate bush cover.
oh, and they changed the intro lyrics of "can you tell" (and not to mention, they completely destroyed the instrumentals to almost every song from the EP)...of course this upset me, and i thought "hmm...hopefully they won't sing it like that live."
today was the moment of truth.

they opened with some new song ... some nameless song.
then continued with a few songs from the EP, then there it was ... i braced myself as the first few plucks of the violin chimed.
i was absolutely disappointed when wes started out "have i been too discreet?"
i almost had the urge to sing the original lyrics "oh baby baby baby please..." loud enough for them to hear me, but i didn't want to be rude.

they ended with "ghost under rocks" and despite my disappointment, they DID put on a great performance as usual.

just ... i hate to say it, but really, if you loved the EP, i'm not sure how you'll feel about the rhumb line.
but if you're a new ra ra riot listener, the album might not give you any problems.
i wanted to LOVE it, but i guess i couldn't.
maybe it'll grow on me.
